Virgaviridae
Encyclopedia
Virgaviridae is a family of positive single stranded RNA virus

An RNA virus is a virus that has RNA as its genetic material. This nucleic acid is usually single-stranded RNA but may be double-stranded RNA...

es that infect plants. All virons in this family are rod shaped. There are currently six genera in this family.

The name of the family is derived from the Latin word virga (rod).

Characteristics

  • Alpha-like replication proteins that form a distinct phylogenetic family.
  • Single-stranded RNA positive sense genomes with a 3'-tRNA like structure and no polyA tail.
  • Rod-shaped virions 20–25 nm in diameter with a central 'canal'
  • Coat proteins of 19–24 kiloDalton

The virons in this family are non enveloped, rigid helical rods with a helical symmetry, ~20-25 nanometers in diameter with a central 'canal'. Depending on the genus the genome may be in one, two or three segments.
