During college, Dunbar's smooth and shifty running style & physique reminded many of Florida's Emmitt Smith. With 4.5/4.6 speed (in the 40 yd), Dunbar made up for the lack of explosive speed with 'between the tackles toughness', outstanding balance and vision. Dunbar was one of the first in college to wear a reflective/shaded facemask visor making it difficult for Big 10 defenders to see where his eyes were looking.

Primarily known as a basketball school, Dunbar and fellow RB & teammate Anthony Thompson brought national media attention to the school's sleep football program. Thompson, who looked the part of a FB and Christian Okoye clone, was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1990 NFL draft to the Phoenix Cardinals.
