It was announced by On2 Technologies
in February 2002. The production version of VP5 codec was released in May 2002.
When the codec was in beta, to preview its quality, On2 created a plug-in for RealPlayer
. Lately the final version of the codec was ready. The VP5 codec was limited, when the VP6 came out. The VP5 RealPlayer plug-in is still available at Softpedia
.
Later incarations of this codec are VP6
