UVCE is ranked 24th in Best Engineering colleges in India as per survey conducted by India Today and Nielsen companyfor the year 2011.

The admission of students to the undergraduate courses is on the basis of merit through the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the state government. The entrance to post-graduate courses is through the Degree, GATE and entrance test results.

Every year, nearly 450 students graduate at the under-graduate level from five disciplines. Among the engineering colleges in Karnataka, UVCE was the earliest to have offered post-graduate courses.

History

In 1917, the then Diwan of Mysore Sir M. Visvesvaraya felt a need to have an engineering college in the state as the Civil Engineering College Madras

Government-related projects assisted by the department include Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna project, BWSSB projects, and National Highway Authority projects. The department is recognized as a Quality Improvement Programme center of UGC/AICTE which offers admission to M. E. and Ph.D. degrees.

In 2008, a student exchange programme was started in the department where students can study abroad for a semester.

Around 150 service, product and research organizations visit the campus for recruitment every year. Usually placements start when the student enters the seventh semester and lasts until graduation.
