The Republic Is Burning (#1-4)

Reed Richards, along with his white-suited followers, the Children of Tomorrow, are standing in the desert in Northern Germany. Reed bemoans creation, preparing a mysterious dome shaped in a manner reminiscent of the mushroom cloud of an atomic bomb.

At the Triskelion in New York, Nick Fury is appraised on a number of developing situations around the world.

In Europe, Asgardian gods pillaged a beer factory, making the EUSS activate their new super team, the Excalibur-class super-soldiers led by the new Captain Britain, Jamie Braddock, to respond. When the team arrives to confront Odin and the Asgardians, they are interrupted by Thor who offers Jamie a drink. Jamie, in a display of disrespect, pours the drink on the floor. This upsets Thor and he attacks Jamie and the other European Captains. The battle makes its way to the German desert where they discover the dome-shaped structure. While investigating it, Captain Italy is grabbed by a large mechanical hand and pulled inside the structure.

Social unrest in Bangkok leaves the city in flames with Clint Barton ready on a moment's notice to intervene. When Clint contacts Fury from the SEAR Triskelion to report his findings, the communications is suddenly cut short.

In Ururguay, an Argentinian fleet approaches with deadly intent. Tony Stark, attending a gala in Tokyo, Japan, is contacted by Nick Fury. Not being able to tend to the situations due to his current locations, Tony uses a new technology, potentiaty stolen from Mysterio after their recent encounter, to remotely control his Iron Man armor. Tony boards one of the ships only to discover it has no crew on board. He tears away the control panel and manages to notice a Stark Industries thermonuclear explosive device beneath it. Before he can react the device is detonated, destroying the armor and leaving Tony in a comatose state.

The Children of Tomorrow engage Thor and the European Captains. After analyzing Captain Italy, the Sixth Geneticist concluded that his abilities and strengths were derived by artificial means, thus concluding their need for him, and killed him. The battle proved difficult, causing Thor to unleash a wave of electric energy. This intrigued the dome, called the City, which has long been self-aware. The Maker, Reed Richards, informed the City that Thor was a God, and that there was a whole city of being similar to him as well. Richards then ordered the Children of Tomorrow to travel to Asgard and de-power the Gods.

Meanwhile, William (whom Tony calls Jarvis) succeeds in resuscitating Tony in the back of his car. Tony then puts on a portable version of his armor, which he kept in his trunk, and flies off towards Paris. Nick Fury manages to contact Tony and informs him that the thermonuclear blast had killed nearly 300,000 people. Tony states that his new friends in the Kratos Club must have tried to kill him. Fury then orders Tony to redirect to Germany to assist in the Asgard situation.

Back at the dome, Captain Britain heads back to the European Defense Initiative while Thor and Captain France head towards Asgard in an attempt to aid in its defense. When they arrive the battle was already almost lost and most of the Asgardians had been killed. In a last-ditch effort to save his race, Thor locates his son, Modi, and brings him to Yggdrasil, the World Tree, and, like Odin had once done to Loki, locked him in the Room with No Doors along with Mjolnir. Loki then joins Thor in his last stand against the Children of Tomorrow, exclaiming that he regrets everything he had done before. The Children of Tomorrow then kill Loki and manage to destroy the World Tree, causing Asgard to vanish, and left the bodies of the Gods to fall to Earth. Iron Man arrives and manages to catch Thor in mid-air, while Thor exclaims, with tears in his eyes, that he felt nothing. They then set course for Triskelion ONE.

Two days after the fall of Asgard, Tony reveals to Thor that he has been keeping his old harness and hammer safe, and has even made improvements. Thor, now powerless, dons the harness.

One week after the fall of Asgard, the City has expanded itself into neighboring European countries. S.H.I.E.L.D. has lost communication with the E.D.I. They gather a fleet of fighter jets and Heli-Carriers to engage the Children of Tomorrow, but they are quickly beaten. In a last-ditch effort, Fury orders the launch of a nuclear missile, but it causes little damage. Thor, once again being the most powerful Super-Soldier on the planet, teleports the fleet away before too many lives are lost.

Later, Thor tell Tony that it was an honor to call him his friend before he teleports himself to the City in an effort to destroy it himself.
