Not liking how games were sold in zip lock bags with a few pages printed out for instructions, Richard Garriott insisted Ultima 2 be sold in a box, with a cloth map, and a manual. Sierra was the only company at that time willing to agree to this, and thus he signed with them. In Ultima 7, the manual served as an anti-piracy device; players were asked questions at two points in the game, and if they could not answer, all NPCs ran from the Avatar, and only said "Oink Oink" and nothing more, preventing the game from being playable. Seeing the success of the Ultima games, other games began being sold in boxes with manuals, and sometimes other things as well.
