The book is presented in a chronological fashion beginning with a introductory chapter on the prehistory of the area and divided into five parts. In order of presentation, the five parts are Kievan Rus', The Polish-Lithuanian Period, The Cossack Era, Ukraine under Imperial Rule, and Twentieth-Century Ukraine.
