UTC Power began as a division of Pratt & Whitney

 in 1958. UTC Power supplied fuel cells to NASA for the Apollo space missions, to supply electric power and drinking water for the astronauts on board and, later, for the Space Shuttle missions. In the early 1990s, UTC Power was the first company to manufacture and commercialize a large, stationary fuel cell application

 for use as a co-generation power plant. UTC Power uses Fuel Cells in addition to other products such as Microturbines, chillers and heat exchangers in order to offer an array of On-Site Power, Transportation, and Space and Defense Products.

The company was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of UTC and named International Fuel Cells. It has since been renamed UTC Fuel Cells and, most recently, UTC Power. The company has expanded into the broader fuel cell industry over the last 10 years, developing fuel cells for automobiles, buses, and mobile applications.

On October 1, 2007, UTC Power acquired NJ based consulting firm, The Dome-Tech Group


On October 7, 2008, UTC Power acquired Architectural Energy Corp., headquartered in Denver, CO.
