After crossing the Potomac River, U.S. 340 briefly enters Virginia before entering West Virginia near Harpers Ferry and Charles Town, then re-entering Virginia on the way to its terminus with U.S. Highway 11. This stretch of U.S. 340 between Harpers Ferry and Charles Town is designated the William L. Wilson Freeway
