The municipality was part of the Payerne District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Trey became part of the new district of Broye-Vully.

Trey has an area, , of 3.8 square kilometre. Of this area, 2.71 square kilometre or 71.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.67 square kilometre or 17.6% is forested.
