Biography

Tony Martin was born in the former East Germany in Cottbus. Along with the rest of his family he escaped from East Germany shortly before the fall of The Berlin Wall and the collapse of communist Eastern Europe. Later he returned to the Eastern part of Germany to attend sport school in Erfurt.

Martin finished second in both the prologue and ITT Stage 19 of the Tour de France, and again wore the Maillot blanc (stages 1-3).
