Mamachi was a zealous supporter of the power of the Roman Pontiff. Involved in all the controversy of the day, he was one of the first to take issue with Johannes Nicolaus Von Hontheim (Febronius). Pius VI made him secretary of the Index (1779) and afterwards Master of the Sacred Palace
