Alan Shapiro wrote and directed the pilot, which was aired as a special preview on March 25, 1990 (seven years after the release of the film) at 9:30 p.m., garnered 14.1 million viewers and was Fox's highest rated drama in the network's history. When the series was moved to its regular timeslot of 7 p.m., ratings quickly dropped off. After eight episodes, Fox canceled The Outsiders. The remaining five episodes aired through July and were repeated through August 1990.
