In December 1991, NECTEC was transformed into a specialized national center under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), a new agency following the enactment of the Science and Technology Development Act of 1991.

Criticism

As the national computer technology center, NECTEC has been criticized of its lack of information technology systems. In addition to that, NECTEC's Web site claims itself as the first HTTP server in Thailand. However, the site has been largely left obsolete, the site title still saying "2003". This forms the basis of a popular joke in Thailand's IT community, with NECTEC having the "oldest" HTTP server in Thailand.
