Traditions

Seal: The seal of Texarkana College was designed by former instructor Richmond White. Encircling the star of Texas is the live oak branch symbolizing strength and grandeur and the laurel branch representing honor and peace. The year of 1927 is written above the star of Texas to represent the year that Texarkana College was established.

The College Mace: Originally a medieval weapon, the mace evolved from a short staff weighted with metal, which was used for breaking armor, into a bejeweled and sculptural relic. In one of the earliest ceremonial uses of the mace, it was carried by the royal bodyguard before the French king in the 13th century. Examples of the mace as a symbol of authority in modern government include its use in the British House of Commons where the ceremonial mace has a presence on the Treasury table, and in the U.S. House of Representatives, where it is placed on a pedestal to the right of the Speaker’s podium when the House is convened. Universities and colleges also use the ceremonial mace, borne by the chief marshal, during academic processions. The mace, a grand emblem of the College’s heritage, is carried at the head of all formal academic processions, by a grand marshal referred to as the “Mace Bearer”.

President’s Medallion: The President's Medallion is a traditional academic symbol of the authority and responsibility presented at the beginning of a newly appointed president's tenure in office.

The Texarkana College President's Medallion is worn whenever the president participates in ceremonies involving the use of academic regalia, including all such services held by other educational institutions on their campuses or in nearby facilities.

The President's Medallion is one of the grand traditions of higher education. Most presidents consider wearing the President's Medallion a distinguishing highlight of their careers and an honorable symbol of their temporary stewardship of their university's leadership.
