, fax or via the internet. Actually
Licht ins Dunkel is a permanent project and donations can also be made at post offices, banks and via the internet all year round and not necessarily on Christmas Eve during the telethon. The word telethon itself is not used in Austria, but similar names such as Fernsehmarathon (television marathon) or Spendenmarathon (marathon of donations) are used.

Although the sum of money raised is increasing from year to year, these telethons are facing increasing criticism from viewers complaining about the whole-day blocking of one of the country's most important nationwide public television channels which usually airs highly-rated programmes about culture, society, politics and business.

The telethon is also relayed on several regional public channels which either rebroadcast the nation-wide telethon or organize additional shows on a regional or local level. Parts of the telethon are also aired on the German-language international satellite channel 3sat
3sat

3sat is the name of a public, advertising-free, television network in Central Europe. The programming is in German, and is broadcast primarily within Germany, Austria and Switzerland....
which is available throughout Europe - these parts of the telethon are relayed to 3sat's domestic service in Austria as well. Thus, viewers who are getting their television signals solely over the air and do not have access to satellite reception or cable-tv usually get 6 to 10 different channels of which at least three broadcast
Licht ins Dunkel, parts of it, or regional telethons of Licht ins Dunkel on December 24, which is another source of annoyance for this group of viewers.

Since Austria is a highly organized welfare state with very high taxes to pay for a tight social security system, national health care which is free for everybody and government-provided help for people in need, many viewers consider additional money raising on public television as highly annoying or unnecessary. Some people even complain about
Licht ins Dunkel since they do not wish to be confronted with the lives and problems of disabled persons on Christmas Eve.

Even some associations of disabled persons heavily criticized
Licht ins Dunkel since disabled people are commonly depicted during the telethon as if they were completely helpless and unable to make their lives. Every year, some businesses consider the show as another advertising opportunity and make very high donations just in order to be mentioned one more time on television.

In 2008, several leading politicians appeared on the show which caused another wave of criticism - many viewers had the opinion that politicians should rather optimize the welfare state to provide better help for people for whom the public welfare services are not sufficient instead of pledging for donations. Telethon was run nationwide in New Zealand in 1976, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1990 and 1991 by TVNZ and later, CanWest's TV3

in 1993. Its distinctive theme song "Thank You Very Much For Your Kind Donation" signalled the beginning of fun, silliness, pranks and local and international superstars making complete fools of themselves for all to see. At is time, New Zealand telethons had become world famous with global stars vying to be invited to participate. The 24 hour fund-raiser would take place in regions around new Zealand with TVNZ coverage being shown on TV1, (although 1976, 1990 and 1991 were hosted by TV2). Viewers would be shown coverage of the Telethon nearest their location. Smaller regions would typically see coverage of the Telethon in one of the main centres (Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin). The 1976 venues were hosted in the then-NZBC studios of the four main centres. But after the first Telethon, the rest were hosted in large exhibition halls and indoor stadiums as the public soon flocked in their thousands to be seen on TV and to watch the entertainment live.

After 1976 each Telethon always outdid the previous raised total. The largest Telethon with money raised was 1985 (over $6 million) and merely one month later TVNZ participated in the LiveAid global telethon bringing in $1.8 million for New Zealand's contribution. The largest undertaking including smaller regional centres with host locations was 1988. However the economic climate at the time saw money raised drop in 1988 ($5 million) and 1990 ($4 million) while hosting costs soared.

In 1991 an emergency fund-raising 16 hour telethon was hurriedly arranged after a devastating cyclone

flattened most of Western Samoa. The total raised was just over $1.5 million with the NZ Government matching the amount dollar-for-dollar, taking the total to just over $3 million.

The last nationwide event was to raise funds for the Starship Children's Hospital in 1993, TV3 being the host. Events focussed on the main venue at TV3's Auckland studios, with roving crews reporting from around the country. The event raised just over $3.5million.

Since Telethon ceased on nationwide television some regional stations have operated their own local Telethon to fund local facilities.

A return was announced in August 2008 that TV3 will broadcast the 21.5 hour Telethon "The Big Night In" starting at 8.30pm on Saturday 20 June 2009, featuring a host of celebrities including New Zealand and international stars.
