Traditionally, Marathi cinema has involved tamasha and many premier actresses, including Sandhya and Jayshree Gadkar amongst others have played parts/ roles of tamasha artists. Some Hindi movies have also included "tamasha" songs in the past.

Unfortunately, over the years tamasha has started to be looked down upon and is today a dying art.

In colloquial Hindi, the term tamasha is used to refer to a commotion, or any activity or display with bustle and excitement, sometimes ironically in the sense of "a tempest in a teacup."
