There have been many generations of Symmetrix hardware, with the first appearing in 1990 and the latest, the Symmetrix VMAX Series, introduced in April 2009. The development of the Symmetrix's new features and huge internal software base, amid increasing its capacity and performance in orders of magnitude, have been an on-going process since its introduction.
Symmetrix arrays, EMC's flagship product at that time, began shipping in 1990 as an IBM Mainframe Block Multiplex Channel - (aka Bus and Tag) connected storage array.
