Reception

After an initial catastrophic launch, Kerberos and Paradox interactive admitted that it was release or die. They are working on patching, but it is surmised a lot of patching will have to be done.

A November 8 review on Game Informer

summarized the game as "A Total Disaster", explaining that "This might be a decent game after six more months of twice-weekly patching. Right now, it’s a failure on every level."

In response to the catastrophic launch, Kerberos has offered customers the option to get a refund. Regardless, everyone also received a free key for the original game (Sword of the Stars). All the people subscribed to the Paradox Interactive newsletter have also received such a key (even without having bought SotS 2). It is currently not known if this is an error or intended.
