Switch Communications
Encyclopedia
Switch is a privately held technology company based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Switch owns and operates high security data centers.

Company Overview

Switch owns and operates several data centers or colocation facilities in the Las Vegas valley: NAP1 (recently consolidated into NAP7), NAP2 (the former Enron Broadband building), NAP3, NAP4, NAP5, NAP6, and NAP7, a.k.a. the SuperNAP. Switch recently announced they are adding more than one million additional square feet of data center facilities at the Las Vegas Digital Exchange Campus in the southwest part of Las Vegas.

Switch WDMD

Most data centers today are faced with severe issues resulting from improper management and control of equipment-generated heat. Switch offers forward looking designs for space and power in the industry. Switch facilities are designed to Switch WDMD (Wattage Density Modular Design) standards to deliver complete isolation and control over the heat that your equipment produces.

Switch has created the t-scif (Thermal Separate Compartment in Facility) for the purpose of completely separating the hot and cold aisles, ensuring that the hot equipment exhaust is never blended into the cold aisles in the data center. Each customer has a private, caged t-scif that enables high power and cooling densities.

The SuperNAP

The Supernap is the tenth largest colocation facility in U.S., although it is ranked number 1 in total power and cooling. Opened in 2008, its specifications are:
  • 146 MVA of generator capacity
  • 84 MVA of UPS supply
  • 30,000 tons of system plus system cooling
  • 30 cooling towers
  • Designed for 1,500 watts per sq ft density
  • 7,000 cabinets in a thermal-separated patented design
