He has since blossomed into 'cult legend' status amongst Celtic fans, much like another former Celtic player – Enrico Annoni – who also failed to figure much in first team competition. Celtic fan website "The Huddleboard" often mention Bonnes as an affectionate option in various polls, ranging from "Best striker ever" to "Best 1980s action movie" – Bonnes being the preferred choice of many.

Rumours that he was unsuccessful in a trial match for The Huddleboard football team are unconfirmed however it is known that Follow Follow, a fanzine of rivals Rangers, offered him a game, Bonnes however said "no thanks".

Since retiring from the game, he has been nominated for living Sainthood by the collective 'Online Celtic Supporters' fanbase.
