His refusal leaves her heartbroken. In a last-ditch effort to save Yinsi from his fate, she warns him to be wary of Yinzhen and a number of his men who in the future would pose a threat to Yinsi. Her stay in the Forbidden City brings her closer to Yinzhen, and eventually she falls in love with him. However, Yinsi and his followers sets a trap for Yinzhen which Yinxiang bravely steps forward to take blame. The result is 10 years of solitary confinement. The Crown Prince is eventually stripped of his position as the crown prince after the discovery of his crimes. The emperor starts to show preference for the 14th prince, Yinti, and eventually bestows Ruoxi to him. Her adamant refusal to the emperor’s order results in her being stripped of her title and sent to the laundry department.

The emperor eventually dies and Yinzhen becomes Emperor Yongzheng. He immediately sets Yinxiang free and makes Ruoxi his lady-in-waiting. Though finally together, her happiness is greatly marred by the brutal tactics that the emperor uses against his enemies, since many of them are close to Ruoxi. Finally, Yinsi’s gang reveals to Ruoxi that their hostility toward Yinzhen stemmed from Ruoxi’s warning many years ago. Rouxi finally realizes that, under a predestination paradox

, she became the instigator of the tragedy she had tried to avoid. Her despair results in a miscarriage. She eventually tells the emperor that she was to blame for everything. Knowing that everything is over, she asks Yinti to help her leave the palace. The 14th prince, produces a decree from Emperor Kangxi that bestows Ruoxi to Yinti. Yinzhen is forced into obeying this order and Ruoxi is finally able to leave the Forbidden City.

Despite Yinti's excellent care, Ruoxi’s condition worsens. During her last days, she sends a letter to the emperor and asks him to come see her one last time. Unfortunately, a series of events prevents him from doing so. Despite Ruoxi's struggles to stay alive, she concludes that Yinzhen's absence is proof that his love for her is over. She dies sadly in Yinti's arms. When her death reaches Yinzhen, the emperor rushes to Yinti’s residence with Yinxiang. They scatter her ashes to the wind in honor to her last wishes.

In 2011, Zhang Xiao wakes up in the hospital, where she is informed that she had been in a coma for weeks after her accident. She questions whether everything that happened was all a dream. After she recovers, she visits a museum exhibiting artifacts from the Qing Dynasty. She discovers that she is able to recall many artifacts on display. At the same time, a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to Yinzhen visits the exhibit as well. Even though the man does not recognize her, she is unable to contain herself. It ends with Zhang in tears as the man walks away from her.

Deviation from the novel

The producers have reportedly claimed that the television series will remain faithful to the original story by Tong Hua, but with a new ending. In the novel, Ma'ertai Ruoxi is unable to return to her own time and ultimately succumbs to her illness, while the Yongzheng Emperor

 dies years later in hope of reuniting with Ma'ertai Ruoxi in death. However in the serial, after Ruoxi and Yongzheng die, the former's soul returns to her incarnation in the 21st century. While struggling to get over the trauma from her experiences in time traveling, she ultimately meets a man who resembles Yongzheng, possibly a present-day incarnation of the Yinzhen. Despite the fans' anticipation that there will be a romantic involvement between them, they did not fall in love. Instead, Zhang is heartbroken as she realizes that her romance with Yinzhen is truly over, and his appearance merely gives her necessary closure to move on with her life, yet the story has a sad ending.

After attaining absolute power, he becomes more power-hungry and cruel as he sought to punish his brothers who he accused of meddling with court matters or harming Ruoxi. He is Ruoxi's true love but ultimately breaks up with her due to his increasing paranoid and ruthless means to achieve his objectives, only through a devastation of her death he would realizes of how much he still loves her. Towards the end, he slowly begin to regret of his extreme behavior and choice of power over love and family after Ruoxi's death. The 13th prince. Of Mongolian heritage, his mother passed away when he is young boy and is brought up by Yinzhen's mother. He is a bold, staunch supporter of Yinzhen and historically provided military support to Yinzhen during his political battles against his brothers to succeed Kangxi. In the serial, he is also a close confidant of Ma'ertai Ruoxi. He has a beautiful daughter, Chenghuan with the ill-fated companion Lüwu. Due to Ruoxi's warning and Yinsi's intrigue, he took the rap for Yinzhen and was imprisoned by Kangxi for 10 years. Yongzheng Emperor promoted him as First Class Prince Yi, a hereditary title. He worked tirelessly for Yinzhen in all important court matters. In the serial, he eventually befriends his half-brother, Yinti. The 9th prince. His mother hailed from the illustrious Guoluoluo clan. He is a favourite son of Kangxi. A fact demonstrated when Kangxi forgave him despite his role in a huge corruption scandal. A petty schemer and venomous manipulator masked a silky voice that charmed Yutan. Devoid of feelings and gratitude, he was perplexed by Yutan's devotion to him despite causing her death. He is destined to be disgraced by Yinzhen and died in house arrest prison. In the serial, Ruoxi avenged Yutan's needless sacrifice by passing the latter's last letter to Yintang. The condition was Yintang must read Yutan's letter before committing suicide as a form of release from his suffering. In the note, Yutan declares her love for Yintang and accepted her fate and death. Yintang realised the message's objective babbled that Ruoxi more vindicate than Yinzhen before dying.

Ma'ertai Ruoxi's older sister and second wife of Yinsi. She had a lover before marrying Yinsi and therefore, could never truly love Yinsi and be his wife. Perplexed, Yinsi sent minders to General Ma'ertai's hometown to gather more information to unravel the mystery of Ruolan's coldness towards him. An anxious General Ma'ertai immediately transfered Ruolan's lover to the frontline only to see him killed in action. Ruolan blamed Yinsi for her lover's death and vowed never to reciprocate Yinsi's affections. She passed away by Ruoxi side. Yinsi, on Ruoxi's request, grant Ruolan a divorce so that she can reunite with her lover in the netherworld.
Shi Xiaoqun Guoluoluo Minghui

Yinsi's wife. She committed suicide after divorcing him because of her extreme love for him. Minghui dislike Ruolan from the beginning and think of her as a rival, but realized that she have been competing for nothing when she found out that Ruolan never loved Yinsi. Her revelation of Ruoxi's warning that caused YinXiang to be house arrest for 10 years caused Ruoxi to be in extreme shock and had a miscarriage.
Guo Zhenni Lüwu

Yinxiang's love interest. Descendant of the Lü clan who was purged for their involvement in an unsuccessfully revolt against the Manchu Qing dynasty. She is initially a close companion of Yinxiang and accompany the latter during the 10 year solidarity confinement by Kangxi. Both became lovers and had a daughter Chenghuan. She later commit suicide because she knew her background will present grave political baggage to Chenghuan, Yinxiang and Yongzheng Emperor.

Yinxiang and Lüwu's daughter. In the serial, Yinzhen, seeing the joy Chenghuan brought to Ruoxi, summoned enough courage to profess his love to Ruoxi. In Tong Hua's epilogue, Yongzheng Emperor married her to the son of Mongolian Princess MinMin. Princess Minmin was the admirer of her father, Yinxiang and Yinzhen knew the former will treat Chenghuan with great love.
Cao Xinye Qiaohui
(巧慧)
Ma'ertai Ruolan's faithful maid from home who accompanied on her marriage into the Aisingoro family. She later becomes Ruoxi's maid and then ChengHuan's maid/caretaker. She was entrusted with the heartbreaking task of telling Yinzhen that Ruoxi yearned to see him and died disappointed during her last days. Her curt description of Ruoxi's devotion to Yinzhen despite suffering from fatigue and illness, brought the stoic Yinzhen close to tears. Before Ruoxi died, she requested Qiaohui to be Chenghuan's caretaker. Qiaohui promised Ruoxi that she divulge to Chenghuan's her mother's identity and death anniversary after Yinxiang's death.
Ye Qing Yutan

Ruoxi best friend. Unknown to Ruoxi, Yu Tan was 9th Prince Yintang's sleeper mole in Kangxi's palace. After the death of Kangxi, despite many subtle warnings from Yinzhen, Yu Tan persisted in gathering intelligence for the 9th Prince. Yinzhen tolerated her because of Ruoxi but had her killed by steaming when she influenced Hongshi to challenge his father and brother for the throne using the 'Rule of the Eight Banner Kings' petition. Despite knowing her eventual demise, she has no regrets helping Yintang and pleads with Ruoxi to pass her final letter pledging her love to an ungrateful Yintang. Yinxiang claimed Yutan's subversion of Hongshi was a taboo act. Ruoxi ruefully commented it was the politicking between Yintang and Yinzhen that truly caused Yutan's death.
