St. Martin's is a co-educational, comprehensive, foundation school for pupils aged 11 to 19 years. In 2000 the DfES (Government) designated St. Martin's as a national beacon school of excellence and in 2005 the DfES designated St. Martin’s as a high-performing specialist school.

The school is a specialist technology college (science, mathematics, technology, ICT) a humanities specialist school (English and history) and at the request of the government a third specialist area will be added from April 2009 (probably as a languages college for French and German).
