Former rivalries

In its long history St. Mary's has had three sports rivalries, only one being in existence today. For at least 20 years, St. Mary's was rivals with St. Pius X High School in Kansas City North, Missouri. Their rivalry ended when St. Mary's expanded it's enrollment. Their next rival, and perhaps their biggest, was Grain Valley High School for at least 10 years, at this time, St. Mary's had several hundred students and Grain Valley had around 600, it is said that every time the two teams met on the football field that a fight would break out. This classic rivalry between the two schools ended when Grain Valley decided to expand it's enrollment and St. Mary's lowered it's enrollment to 200 students. In 2010, Van Horn, formerly of the Kansas City School District, joined the Independence School District and became a member of the Crossroads Conference, despite having an enrollment of 900 students. The two schools first met on the football field in September 2010 for the St. Mary's homecoming football game, the Trojans won their first game against their new rival 38-7, the two schools have continued to face off in other sports, football, basketball, and baseball being their most competitive.
