On March 12, 1772, what was left of Albany County was split into three parts, one remaining under the name Albany County. The other two were called Tryon County

On September 5, 1944, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the county, which was centered in Massena. The earthquake was felt from Canada south to Maryland, and from Maine west to Indiana. The earthquake was also the strongest earthquake in New York State history.
