Background

Lead singer Bart Millard noted that MercyMe's earliest goal on Spoken For was to create songs that were "singable", as well as to "[make] sure they fit on power point because we wanted to write songs for corporate worship". He also stated that "As a whole, this album is a little more on the rock side as well". Regarding the title, he noted that "Over the last year I’ve been consumed with the idea that God is so crazy in love with us... The phrase "spoken for" really stuck with me".

gave the album a positive review, commenting that "While not a perfect sophomore effort, as the group occasionally sways to the triteness so often found on AC/pop projects, MercyMe has progressed in musical focus, songwriting and vocals," also commenting that "While the group’s previous indie projects tended toward a rock rhythm that was occasionally woven into Almost There, this time around the group leaves all signs of rock behind. praised the album for it cohesiveness, commenting that "[Almost There] was sort of an introduction for the band to a broader national audience, featuring a collection of songs drawn from Mercy Me's previous independent efforts. Although the songs were newly recorded for Almost There, it still was material written over a seven-year span. Naturally the songwriting varies greatly over that length of time. Spoken For, on the other hand, is a cohesive 11-track album of all new songs. It feels new and fresh with stronger songwriting than that found on Almost There. If you liked the previous album, I suspect you'll enjoy this one even more"; he further argued that "Even more impressive is the band's sound...
