The census officially recorded the population of the USSR at 286,717,000, making it the third most populous country in the world. Of the whole population, about 51% lived in the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic, making it the most populous of the Soviet Republics. The only other republic to house a large percent of the Soviet population was the Ukrainian SSR
