He was the vice chairman of 4th and 5th National Political Consultative Conference. He was an alternative member of Politburo of 8th CPC central committee, a secretary of central secretariat of 11th CPC central committee, and a politburo member of 12th.

He was the vice-chairman of the PRC's Central Advisory Committee. He died aged 96 in Beijing
