The meaning of "Something's Missing"

The song is about a "gap" or a "hole". Mayer talks of the song as meaning one can't specifically say what it is, but that "something's missing".

In the song, he goes through a checklist of things in his life, each of which he confirms is NOT missing (in sequence):
  • Friends
  • Money
  • Well-slept
  • Opposite sex
  • Guitar
  • Microphone
  • Messages waiting on him when he comes home

After this, the lyrics then digress and cause him to wonder, "How come everything I think I need always comes with batteries?".

John plays this song in an unusual tuning, tuned (from bottom to top) E B E F# B E. This tuning was also used in the song "In Your Atmosphere" so he often mixes the two songs at live concerts.

He also uses an unusual guitar, a blue Fender Stratocaster/Telecaster hybrid.
