 on rocky or woody terrains. A ski helmet must be properly fitted to provide maximum protection, performance and comfort.

In addition to providing protection, some newer helmets come with built-in earpad speakers for listening to portable music devices.

Some criticisms of helmets are: the wearers of helmets are more likely to seriously injure other participants in an accident due to the hard material; the limited visibility and ability to hear other skiers when wearing helmets; increased likelihood to attempt dangerous stunts/practices while wearing a helmet; and a lack of awareness about care/replacement of helmets.

Snell Memorial Foundation

The Snell Memorial Foundation is a not-for-profit organization created to provide a high quality standard of safety for helmets. Founded in 1957, SMF is named after William "Pete" Snell, a popular sports car race car driver who died in 1956 of head injuries he received when the racing helmet he wore failed to protect his head....

ASTM standards have been determined by a battery of tests on helmet models, including testing the strength of a helmet's retention system under simulated hot, cold and wet conditions. While ASTM and Snell's ski helmet standards are similar, Snell tests helmets obtained by purchase from randomly chosen retailers, testing the characteristics of the helmet as manufactured.
