Skaraborg County

'''Skaraborg County''', or ''Skaraborgs län'', was a [[Counties of Sweden|county]] of [[Sweden]] until December 31, 1998 when it was merged with the counties of [[Gothenburg and Bohus County|Gothenburg and Bohus]] and [[Älvsborg County|Älvsborg]] to form [[Västra Götaland County]]. The former county was named after a fortress (in [[Swedish language|Swedish]] ''borg'') outside the [[Cities of Sweden|city]] of [[Skara]], the seat of residence for the county governor was [[Mariestad]], and the largest [[Cities of Sweden|city]] was [[Skövde]]. The [[Counties of Sweden|county]] consisted or the northern part of the [[Provinces of Sweden|province]] of [[Västergötland]]. Even though Skaraborg County itself no longer exists, various organizations are still (in 2006) named after it, and cover that approximate area. These include several newspapers, one public radio channel (P4 Skaraborg) and various non-profit organizations.
