Formally commissioned as Sitka Naval Air Station in October 1939, this facility was redesignated as the Naval Operating Base in July 1942. During the early months of World War II, it was among the few installations prepared to guard the North Pacific against enemy incursion. Airplanes stationed at the base patrolled the southeast Alaskan waters, tracking reported submarines and watching for other enemy activity.
