Customs

In Germany, a popular Silvester custom is "lead pouring" (das Bleigießen), where molten lead is read like tea leaves. A small amount of lead is melted in a tablespoon and then poured into a bowl or bucket of water. The resulting pattern is interpreted to predict the coming year. If the lead forms a ball (der Ball), that means luck will roll your way. The shape of an anchor (der Anker) means help in need. But a cross (das Kreuz) signifies death.

Safety Considerations

Exposure to even minute amounts of lead, such as from breathing lead fumes; using the same spoon, bowl, bucket, or water for food; or handling lead and then either eating or touching one's mouth, can cause lead poisoning

. This danger can be reduced, but not eliminated, by properly disposing of the lead and water, and promptly washing anything that has come in contact with the lead.
