McPhee has played a role in the development of college athletics, receiving the 2004 Outstanding College President in the Nation Award given by the All American College Football Foundation. He currently serves on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and the NCAA Executive Committee.

Once a semester, McPhee answers questions from MTSU students about the state of the university on CloseUp with Sidney McPhee, which is aired on MTSU's student-run television station, MTTV. The program also airs live on stations in other States in the Southeast.

McPhee was the subject of a sexual harassment lawsuit in 2003 filed by the alleged victim, Tammie Allen. The case was heard by the Tennessee Supreme Court June, 6 2007.
The court found that McPhee had violated the Tennessee Board of Regents' sexual harassment policy and he was given a 20 day suspension, had his salary reduced by $10,000 for one year and was required to attend an employment-issues sexual harassment class. Ms. Allen was transferred to the University Office of the Vice President for Development and University Relations and received a $4,000 pay raise.
