Plot synopsis

Captain Buck Devlin (Randolph Scott

), and cavalry troopers Sgt. John Maitland (James Garner

) and Pvt. Wilbur Clegg (Gordon Jones) are on a mission to find out who sold faulty ammunition to a cavalry troop that was commanded by Devlin’s brother. The ammo caused the troop to be massacred by Sioux Indians.

On the way, they manage to get their uniforms stolen, but are given spare clothes by Quaker brethren. Disguised as Quakers, they trace the defective ammunition to Medicine Bend where local businessman Ep Clark (James Craig

) is forcing local traders out of business with a combination of threats and undercutting prices with faulty goods.

Maitland and Clegg infiltrate Clark’s business by taking jobs at his store. Clark and his cohorts are robbed and the money finds its way back to the locals from whom it was originally extorted.

Clark, now suspicious of the three strangers in town, tries to lure Devlin into a trap, but fails. Clark’s scheming is uncovered and Devlin prevents him supplying the territory with faulty guns and ammunition.
