Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra was established in 1982, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra has grown into one of the best professional orchestras in China with the full support of Shenzhen municipal government over the past two decades, gaining both national and international fame Chen Chuansong as General Manager of the Orchestra has followed the principle of pursuing excellence, serving the public and bringing music to every household in Shenzhen in developing the Orchestra. Due to its contribution to the development of the cultural undertakings in Shenzhen, the Orchestra has been listed as a key art organization to be supported by Shenzhen municipal government.

Ever since 1987, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra has been touring around China giving performances every year, having visited Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau several times. It has also visited Europe at invitation. The symphony concerts it gave in Berlin Philharmonic Hall and the Smetana Concert Hall in Prague were warmly applauded by musicians, news media and the audience.

The Orchestra has established extensive friendly and cooperative relations with prominent conductors, performers and other orchestras at home and abroad. It has delivered successful performances in cooperation with Chinese conductors of the old generation such as Li Delun, Han Zhongjie, Zheng Xiaoying, Bian Zushan, Huang Xiaotong and Chen Xieyang as well as young conductors like Zhang Guoyong, Chen Zuohuang and Shao En. Renowned conductor Yao Guanrong served as the Principal Conductor of the Orchestra from 1985 to 1997. The position of Artistic Director was held by famous conductor Zhang Guoyong from 1998 to 2000 and by Prof. Yu Feng from 2001 to 2007 and has been held by German conductor Christian Ehwald since 2008. Many world-known figures have been guest conductors of the Orchestra including the Music Director of Komische Oper Berlin Prof. Reuter, Principal Conductor of Berlin Symphony Orchestra Michael Schønwandt, Director of Munich Symphony Orchestra Heiko Mathias Förster, Director of Hamburg State Opera Simone Young, Dean of Sydney Conservatorium of Music Ronald Smart, chancellor of the Mozarteum University of Salzburg in Austria Reinhart Von Gutzeit, and Japanese conductor and Yoshikawa Fukumura. They have all spoken highly of the performance and potential of the Orchestra. The Orchestra also had the chance to perform with prominent Chinese composer Tan Dun, pianist Lang Lang, Spanish tenor Carreras, movie music master Erich Kunzel, pianist Li Yundi and Chen Sa, which turned out to be very successful. In particular, it has been cooperating with Lang Lang in putting on performances ever since 2004, during which Lang Lang appreciates the excellence of the Orchestra a lot.
