History

She's the First was launched November 1st 2009. The founders, Tammy Tibbetts and Christen Brandt, met at a New York Women in Communications awards ceremony called The Matrix Awards

. Tibbetts shared her vision for She's the First with Brandt and they teamed up. The organization launched in the fall of Brandt's junior year at Syracuse University

The campaign connects these college women with the girls and schools in need of sponsorship. The Syracuse University chapter is the alma mater of one of the founders of the organization, Christen Brandt. It was the first branch created and served as the pilot program for other schools. All chapters have their own own social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter pages. Mission

She’s the First is a not-for-profit that sponsors girls’ education in the developing world, helping them be the first in their families to graduate. In the process, She’s the First fosters leadership and self-awareness in young Americans, by inspiring them to lead creative fundraisers and correspond with sponsored students. Our efforts shape a rising generation of well-educated global leaders, future philanthropists, and cross-cultural communicators.

Partners and programs

She's the First hosts an online directory of NGOs with sponsorship programs which they have vetted and stay in year-round contact with to track the girls' progress. They connect donors with these programs to arrange the sponsorship.

She's the First uses simple fundraising ideas to add up to larger sums. They have organized fundraisers like bake sales and poker nights. In its first year, She's the First raised $13,500 and sponsored 37 girls in developing countries.
