Overview

SRR 12's first episode "Mamanyiika" plays on the words "mama" and "manyika" which literally means "mother doll". The story of a possessed doll is being starred by Shaina Magdayao, child star Elijah Alejo and Ricky Davao. Directed by Zoren Legaspi, it also features Jackie Lou Blanco, Malou Crisologo, Rita Avila, Jed Madela, and Mahal as the voice of the doll. Carmina Villarroel has a cameo role on the episode.

Plot

The "Mamanyika" opens with a flashback. The Federico family bounds for home from an event during a rainy night. Gail (Jackie Lou Blanco) begins to break down and blames her husband Jerrick (Ricky Davao) for committing adultery. Driven by anger, Gail tries to escape but Jerrick stops her, with her two daughters Ara (Shaina Magdayao) and Abigail (Elijah Alejo) in pursuit. In the process, Jerrick was hit by a passing car, paralyzing him. But worst of all, Gail, who was in the middle of the street, was run over by something that ultimately executed her.

A year later, the Federicos have visited Gail's mound in the cemetery in commemoration of her first death anniversary. Abigail, mischievous as ever, finds a doll in a nearby burial mound but was frightened by the cemetery's caretaker. Yaya Miley (Malou Crisologo) and Ara insist they go home.

Back at the residence, Abigail begins to act strange as she converses with her new doll. Her elder sister Ara suspects the worst one night: the mama doll (as Abi calls it) sprang to life and tried to attack her while she was out swimming at night . The next day, Jerrick's doctor friend was sent to examine her but observations prove that nothing was wrong with her behavior (as the doctor puts it, she may be "traumatized"). As soon as Abigail enters the room, a delirious Ara puts the blame on her younger sister's doll, who then comforts Abigail. (It turns out the doll has been possessed by Gail's soul, judging by the way it communicates with Abi).

The following evening, Ara surreptitiously examined the mama doll, whereas she has figured out that there are no batteries installed at the doll's chamber; this shocked Ara, as she had previously witnessed the doll moved without any electronic-operated apparatus. The moment the doll faced Ara, it gave an ugly grimace, prompting her to whack it around the room ruthlessly while a sobbing Abi was watching hopelessly. Jerrick comes to the scene afterward but blamed by Ara for all of these.

Jerrick asked Yaya Miley to dispose of the mama doll behind the creek. As soon as it had been dumped in the garbage bin, it began to victimize two wandering garbage men and sneaked back to the Federico residence, seeking revenge against Abi. The doll even cooked, crushed and smashed Abi's newly-bought dolls. Then the deranged doll proceeded to murder a night-strolling Yaya Miley. The next day, everything became apparent: the nanny is missing and Abi's toys are also gone.

This prompted Ara to research every information about that doll. It became apparent when she saw the back of the doll, with its original owner inscribed beneath the battery chamber: someone named Dorothy Cruz (Rita Avila), who was known to be the doll's initial owner. Following these information is that she and her husband Manuel (Jed Madela) had also comprehended with the mama doll what Abi had just been acting on previously.

Communicating with Dorothy's husband, a series of flashbacks was screened. It turns out Dorothy and Manuel Cruz had bore a child but died of an unknown illness at a very premature age. The depression of her child's death drove Dorothy mad, because she and Manuel labored very hard to bore a child. Now a mental institution patient, Manuel relates that Dorothy's mental ailment became worst when the doll was separated from her. Some even speculates that she treats the doll as her child. Until her last breath, Dorothy vowed revenge to those who had made them suffer and used a "voo-doo" to transfer her soul unto the lifeless doll. (This reveals that it was not Gail's spirit maneuvering the doll, but Dorothy's).

Tensions run high the next evening. The mama doll had returned to the house to execute everyone which comes into a scheme: Abi heard again of the "gentle" call of the doll, which imitates the voice of Gail. This puts the scene into climax, wherein a hot pursuit, involving Fermin (John Feir)'s electrocution took place. Ultimately disgusted by the doll's taunting, Jerrick picked up a rifle but his wheelchair was over-maneuvered by the doll and he was thrown into the pool. For one last struggle, Ara and Jerrick witnessed the mama doll imitating Gail, with a convinced Abi throwing it upwards. Ara fired her rifle, whose trajectory ended the horror of the mama doll once and for all.

But this is not the end of the mama doll. Her evil quest continues, victimizing street children.

Overview

Sometimes referred to as "Isla", Topel Lee takes the helm of SRR XII's second episode, which is the tale of three girls, one of them the apple of the eye of a terrible engkanto, who then captures the girl. This stars Andi Eigenmann for her SRR debut role. Rayver Cruz, John Lapus, Kristel Moreno, Solo Kiggins, and Regine Angeles accompany Andi on the episode with Niña Jose having a special participation.

Plot

The second episode opens with an unsuspecting woman (Niña Jose) apparently lost in the woods. No sooner she began to run, she felt her heart being taken away by someone or something. She then started to morph to an undistinguished creature. All turned to black.

At the present, two girls, Andrea (Andi Eigenmann) and Ces (Kristel Moreno) are being invited by their friend Belle (Regine Angeles) on Isla Verde, a secluded remote island wherein no communication means are available, but the only escape is to the boat. Not bothered by this fact, the three girls built a bonfire that night and talked about the "soulmate ritual", related by Ces herself. According to her, all you have to do is to face a mirror, took out any lightening object, and wish solemnly. It must be done at midnight on a full moon. No sooner, Andrea stealthily slipped from the group and tried the ritual on a clear lake. It worked: the reflection manifested as Belle's cousin Ray (Rayver Cruz). Unfortunately, something pulled her into the bottom of the lake and everything darkened.

The next day, Andrea discovers herself waking up in the beach, with Ces and Belle by her side. Her feet are inevitably muddy and does not remember of what transpired last night. Meanwhile, Belle answers Andrea's frequent questions of Ray staying in the island. Flashbacks revealed that Ray lost his girlfriend on the island two years ago. (Ray's Girl Friend was revealed to be Aira the hostage of the Engkanto in the episode's opening.) As an action, he enlisted the aid of his friend Malay (John Lapus) to seek vengeance against the Engkanto. Back in the cottage, Ray was infuriating his cousin for bringing visitors with her, explaining he will be blamed again if one of them gets lost. At this time around, the three girls were back in the beach and Jok (Solo Kiggins), Andrea's helper, was also dragged by the same vine that caught Andrea the night before.

Events began to reach the pinnacle the following evening. The unsuspecting Andrea was taken prisoner by the Lambanas, evil fairies commandeered by the Engkanto himself, during the night. They dragged her to the same lake where the girl had initiated the ritual two nights ago. It seems that the Engkanto's lair was on the bottom of the lake itself. It introduced itself to Andrea, who was being offered a feast by the Engkanto. Unknown to her, Ces and Belle, together with Malay and Ray, organized a search party for the missing Andrea. The two girls shockingly discovered that Andrea was in the cottage the next morning. Relating of what seemed to be the recurring events of Ray's fiancé, Malay warned her not to accept anything desirable from the Engkanto, otherwise she will permanently fall under its spell. Horror-struck, Andrea remembered that she patronized the feast prepared for her by the Engkanto.

The three girls have to wait for the whole night since the boat is due to arrive the next morning. Ray and Malay meanwhile, have their enchanted gadgets "blessed by the power of light". The next second, a battalion of Lambanas infiltrated the cottage and forcibly took Andrea, while Belle and Ces were killed in the process. Malay and Ray hunted down the Lambanas and Andrea herself was brought to the Engkanto itself. A fierce battle between Ray, Malay, Andrea, their demented companions and the Engkanto ensued, with Malay ended up being bitten by one engkanto. Seemingly over, Ray plunged his blessed knife into the engkanto's heart, killing it once and for all.

Andrea woke up the next day, where she was already aboard in a boat with Ray. Unknown to her, Ray was also bitten by the Engkanto during the pandemonium last night (particularly when Ray said, "I've killed everyone who's against us"). He reached out for the girl and the scene turns black while Andrea screams.

It was revealed that the two kids are not able to attend schooling because of their alluding photophobia

(This is implied when Diane tried to open the window, Sarah screamed in pain). Carlo relates that their photophobic attitudes was hereditary and must not be bothered of. Diane was then introduced to the other entrepreneurs of the funeral parlor and was led to the other parts of the Gonzales residence.

With her starting sessions tomorrow, Diane tells her experience in the funerary to her brother Dennis (Mart Escudero). She was admired of Carlo's efforts to raise Ryan and Sarah alone. Teasing that he may be her sister's destiny, Dennis dropped a silver tin canister which was revealed to be a lighter. Infuriated by this, Diane pockets the lighter.

Things started to turn at Diane's first session with the kids; Sarah again suffered from photophobia after her teacher captured a picture of her with flash photography. Carlo proceeds to reprimand Diane about their sensitivity of light. Unfortunately, while the two children were in a break, Diane surreptitiously discovered the true nature of the children: their lunch boxes contain the entrails of corpses which are apparently embalmed by the funerary workers. Ultimately disgusted, Diane confronts Carlo about this. The entrepreneur growled to stay out of their problems. Back at the house, Dennis examined the captured photographs of Sarah and Ryan, which turned out that they have the blood of something cannibalistic.

Horrified, Diane wants to quit her services but cannot do so, because of being friendly attached to Ryan, who was reprimanded by Carlo for divulging the secrets of their nature. (Ryan did not even told his teacher until the next scenes). This is what Diane became infuriated of. Enraged, Carlo revealed his and his companions' true origins: they were once members of a tribe who lost their homes after a fire ravaged it. With nowhere to go, and his wife dead, Carlo planned to build the funeral parlor to earn for a living, although it entails to satisfy themselves with the corpses of decaying people. (Now Diane knows the reason why she had to be home by twilight, because the ghoulish mannerisms of the funerary people manifest at night).

With no means of escape, Diane took refuge in Ryan's room who killed his pet gerbil to cover up Diane's existence. Carlo demands Ryan to show the unsuspecting tutor but she already devised her plan: using their photophobia features as an advantage, she took a picture of Sarah and Carlo to subdue them and makes her way to escape the funerary. Unknown to her, Dennis, who visited the parlor to fetch Diane, was taken hostage by Carlo and threatens to embalm him alive if Diane does not continue to tutor the two kids.

Further infuriated, Diane threw two bottles of formaldehyde

in front of the entrepreneurs and brandishes a lighter rod, stating that she will burn the funerary in exchange of Dennis's freedom. Freeing her brother, Carlo tried to attack Diane but the latter drew out another lighter (Dennis's lighter) and threw it into the formaldehyde residue, igniting a fire that encircled the entrepreneurs, starting a commotion. A limping Dennis and her sister stealthily escaped through the hallway until a morphing Sarah catches up with them. A terrible fight between the two girls ensued until Sarah was impaled into a protruding metal rod, executing her.

Since the main entrance is locked, they have to escape through the other exit. Unfortunately, a burned Carlo traps them in a mortuary and shouts at Diane for meddling with their issues. He relentlessly beat Diane and Dennis until the latter stabs him with a knife. Done with killing the ghouls, they head for the exit, but Ryan, who was left behind, chases them and opens the parlor's doors, aiding the other two to escape.

Back at the house, Diane was tending Dennis's wounds when he shouted aloud. The camera then turns to reveal Ryan embalming and eating Dennis's entrails. He then revealed that he can only eat the corpses' innards during his birthday, with his family sharing with him the whole lot. He then lunges into Diane and the scene cuts to black. (Ryan was one of the tribe's members, thus rendering him photophobic).

Althea Lauren Ricardo of The Freeman gave the film a rating of 7 out of 10 (70%) stating that while it continued the traditional 3-in-1 format, it was "infused with a dash of indie spirit". The second episode - Isla - was described as the "weirdest segment in the trio" due to how its scenes were put together.http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=643547&publicationSubCategoryId=51
