But regardless of the album's exact subgenre, Seven Churches is generally considered a pivotal release that set the stage for death metal's breakaway from thrash. The title of the album refers to the Seven Churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation. The first track begins with a version of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells arranged and performed by producer Randy Burns. It is considered by some as the first death metal album, while others maintain that this distinction is better attributed to the early works of Death. Both Seven Churches and Death's first album Scream Bloody Gore were produced by Randy Burns.
