, and Seattle Children's as a separate, jointly governed entity aimed at advancing both the research and treatment of cancer. The Hutchinson Center, UW Medicine, and Children's consolidated their adult and pediatric medical oncology/hematology clinical care programs at SCCA and each shares equal ownership of SCCA. SCCA's outpatient clinic first opened in January 2001.

Over 250 oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and research physicians cared for nearly 5,000 patients in 2009 for diagnosis and treatment of many types of cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancer. Researched-based treatments are available using stem cell and bone marrow transplantation, gene therapy, specialized antibody therapies, high-dose chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, minimally-invasive surgical techniques, and other specialized therapies.

Purpose

  • Provide patient-focused cancer care.
  • Support the conduct of cancer clinical research and education.
  • Enhance access to improved cancer interventions.
  • Advance the standard of cancer care, regionally and beyond.

Clinical Research

A major focus of SCCA is to speed up the transfer of new diagnostic and treatment techniques from the research setting to patient care. SCCA currently has over 200 clinical trials open for a variety of cancers and blood disorders. The highly integrated approach to cancer research and treatment among SCCA partner organizations supports the flow of scientific information among researchers, clinicians, and patients, thereby accelerating the development of new knowledge and treatment of various cancers.

Patient Care

Primary outpatient services are provided at SCCA’s 150000 square feet (13,935.5 m²) clinic. The clinic offers a comprehensive array of cancer-care services including CT scanning, MRI, mammography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, a medical laboratory, a pharmacy, and laboratories for clinical immunogenetics, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostics.

Adult patients who come to SCCA are seen, depending on their disease and treatment plan, at either the main SCCA clinic or at University of Washington Medical Center. Pediatric patients are treated at either the main SCCA clinic or at Seattle Children’s. SCCA also offers several housing options for out-of-town patients who require longer term treatment, including the Pete Gross House, a 70-unit apartment facility located less than one-half mile from the SCCA clinic. In addition, SCCA opened SCCA House in the fall of 2009, which provides an additional 80 units for patients and their families.
