Screening

Screening, in general, is the investigation of a great number of something (for instance, people) looking for those with a particular problem or feature. One example is at an airport, where many bags get x-rayed to try to detect any which may contain weapons or explosives. People are also screened going through a metal detector. Even though the procedure aims at a large number of screens, it is always equivalent to sampling in statistics
Sampling (statistics)

Sampling is that part of statistical practice concerned with the selection of individual observations intended to yield some knowledge about a population of concern, especially for the purposes of statistical inference....
, because the complete population is almost always inaccessible for screening.

Screening has other, more specific meanings:
  • Screening (printing), a process that represents lighter shades as tiny dots, rather than solid areas, of ink
  • Electric field screening
    Electric field screening

Screening is the damping of electric fields caused by the presence of mobile electric charge carriers. It is an important part of the behavior of charge-carrying fluids, such as ionized gases and electrical conduction electrons in semiconductors and metals....
, in physics, the dampening of an electric field by mobile charges
  • In atomic physics and chemistry, screening effect refers to the observation that electronic properties of atoms are better described if atoms had a lower effective nuclear charge
    Effective nuclear charge

The effective nuclear charge, is the net positive charge experienced by an electron in a multi-electron atom. The term "effective" is used because the shielding effect of negative electrons prevents higher orbital electrons from experiencing the full Atomic nucleus charge....
than that would be otherwise expected from the number of protons present

    Screening (economics)

Screening in economics refers to a strategy of combating adverse selection, one of the potential decision-making complications in cases of asymmetric information....
  • Screening (medicine)
    Screening (medicine)

Screening, in medicine, is a strategy used in a population to detect a disease in individuals without medical sign or symptoms of that disease. Unlike most medicine, in screening, tests are performed on those without any clinical indication of disease....
  • Film screening
    Film screening

A film screening is the displaying of a film, as part of its production and release cycle, before it is widely released to movie theaters. In general, "screening" applies to showing under special circumstances: either the environment or purpose will be different than that experienced by a mass market moviegoer....
, the display of a film in a movie theatre or screening room, for some special purpose such as testing or critical review
