Youth
Scott competed in the United States National Junior Olympics in downhill and slalom skiing at age 14, and finished 13th of the 150 competitors. Wimmer's father owned Scott's uncle Larry Detjens' racing team. Detjens was a champion late model racer who competed at Slinger Super Speedway and Wisconsin International Raceway. Detjens had a race named after him after his death in 1981.
Pre-NASCAR Racing Career
Wimmer started racing at State Park Speedway in Wausau,Wisconsin in 1991 at age 15. He moved up through the ranks, and became a well-known driver in the Midwest. He moved down south, and in 1997 was the Rookie of the Year in the Hooters Cup late model series. He later finished second for the Rookie of the Year in the American Speed Association (ASA) series.
NASCAR career
Nextel Cup Series
Wimmer made his Nextel Cup debut in 2000 with Bill Davis Racing at Atlanta. He qualified the #23 AT&T Pontiac in 31st position and raced to a finish of 22nd while leading nine laps during the race. He returned to Nextel Cup racing in 2002, driving in three of the eight races he attempted. He posted a best finish of 17th during the year, driving mainly in the #27 Dodge. In 2003, he raced in six of his seven attempted races. His first three attempts came with a third Bill Davis Racing team, again using the #27. However, Ward Burton left the #22 Caterpillar Dodge early to get acquainted with his new team and Wimmer finished the last four races for the #22 team.
His rookie year of Nextel Cup racing began very well with a finish of third at the Daytona 500. However, he was only able to post one other top ten finish and finish 27th in the overall point standings. He again raced the #22 Caterpillar Dodge in the 2005 season, but did not finish in the top ten in any of the 36 races. Wimmer finished the year 32nd in points. Towards the end of the 2005 season it was stated that Wimmer returned to the #22 team, however Dave Blaney left RCR and was selected as the 2006 driver. Wimmer then went to the now defunct Morgan-McClure Motorsports to drive the #4 AERO Exhaust Chevrolet for the 2006 season. As of August 28, Scott's best finish came at Bristol Motor Speedway earlier in the season were he finished 19th. On October 3, Eric McClure announced that Wimmer and Morgan-McClure would part ways as soon as Talladega, with Ward Burton as his replacement.
Wimmer signed a Busch/Cup contract for Richard Childress Racing which began in 2007; a move that could resurrect his career. In 2007, he drove the #33 Holiday Inn/Camping World Chevrolet, an R&D car for Richard Childress Racing, in select races and qualified 22nd for the 2007 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway; Wimmer finished 31st in that race. RCR will be fielding the #33 full-time in 2009 with sponsorship from General Mills, who will be leaving the famous #43 Petty Enterprises Dodge at the end of 2008. It was announced recently that the #33 will be driven by Clint Bowyer, who is moving from the #07 Jack Daniels team. The #07 will be driven by Casey Mears, who will be moving to RCR from Hendrick Motorsports #5 team.
In April 2007, Wimmer filed a lawsuit against Bill Davis Racing for $1.2 million dollars. Wimmer says that BDR failed to give him enough notice that he would be fired as the #22 driver, in fact going as far as saying he would be back at the beginning of October 2005 (only to fire him 21 days later). The lawsuit is for what Wimmer would have been paid had he driven the 2006 season for BDR.

Busch Series
Wimmer began racing the Busch Series in 2000 with Bill Davis Racing. He would attempt four races in the #20 AT&T Pontiac and make three of them with a top finish of 18th. He would then race the full season in 2001, driving the #23 Jani-King Pontiac to a best finish of third at Nashville. He would finish the season with two Top 5’s, eight Top 10’s and an overall points finish of 11th. He would race the full season again in 2002 with sponsorship from Siemens for only 18 races. New England Financial and AMI were able to sponsor Wimmer’s #23 Pontiac for two races, however Bill Davis would have to race the #23 in 14 races without a sponsor. Despite a lack of sponsor, Wimmer would have a career year and finish third in the point standings with wins at Dover, Memphis, Phoenix, and Homestead-Miami. During this season he would accumulate 11 Top 5’s and 17 Top 10’s. In 2003, Wimmer would again compete in all of the races for Bill Davis Racing with sponsorship this year from Stacker 2. He drove the #23 Stacker 2 Chevrolet to a ninth place points finish and was able to win a race at Pikes Peak. During the 2003 he was able to race to four Top 5 finishes and twelve Top 10 finishes. Wimmer would not return to the series until 2006, where he occasionally drove the #66 Ford for Brewco Motorsports. As of 2007 he drives the #29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing for weeks that Jeff Burton is taking off from the car. Wimmer won his first Busch Series pole in 2007 at Gateway International Raceway in the Busch Silver Celebration 250 with a time of 33.246 and a speed of 135.355.
Burton and Wimmer combined to win the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series Owners Championship for Richard Childress Racing.
NATIONWIDE SERIES
March 22, 2008 Scott win's his first race of the season winning at the Pepsi 300 in Nashville Tennessee. After the 2008 season, Wimmer left Richard Childress Racing and in 2009, he will drive the #5 JR Motorsports Chevrolet.
Personal life
Scott is married to his wife Jody. They had a son named Hayden Phillip Wimmer on July 19, 2005.
