. Founded in 1903 as the School of Nursing, it added three other health related majors in 1999 and appended its name to become the School of Nursing & Health Studies. The school has been at the forefront of education in the health care field, offering many programs unique to America's elite institutions. Offering undergraduate and graduate programs in the health sciences, graduates are prepared to enter the complex fields of medicine, law, health policy, and nursing. NHS is made up of the Department of Health Systems Administration, the Department of Human Science, the Department of International Health, and the Department of Nursing.

The Department of Human Science completed the Discovery Center in 2006. The Discovery Center includes a Basic Health Science Teaching Laboratory, a Molecular and Cell Biology Research Laboratory, a Cell Culture Room, a Preparation and Instrument Room, and a Zeiss Axiovert 200 microscope.

In 2011, the Department of Nursing launched an online nursing initiative at the graduate level. The online initiative builds upon Georgetown’s on-campus graduate nursing program. In addition to the online graduate option in nursing, Georgetown will continue offering its on-campus programs.

NHS is home to GUS - Georgetown University Simulator - a full-body, robotic mannequin that can realistically replicate physiological conditions and symptoms and pharmacological responses. The simulator is within the O'Neill Family Foundation Clinical Simulation Center, which includes adult patient simulators, a pediatric patient simulator, five primary care offices, and two hospital units.

Several graduate programs within NHS were ranked in the 2012 "America's Best Graduate Schools" edition of U.S. News & World Report. The Nurse Anesthesia Program was ranked 17th , the Healthcare Management Program was ranked 29th, the Nurse Midwifery Program was ranked 19th, and the nursing graduate program was ranked 36th. The school also has an active research program.

The Department of Health Care Management & Policy offers a unique program for students interested in careers in the health care field, specializing in the management, organization and policy of health care delivery systems. Students' experiences are enriched by being located in Washington, D.C.

The program offer a 'management' track and a 'policy' track for coursework. The management track focuses on the organizations of health care delivery while the policy track prepares students that are interested in the policies behind health care in the U.S. and around the world.


The Department of Human Science offers undergraduates a curriculum designed for the study of basic biomedical health sciences, and the application of scientific disciplines (e.g., biology, chemistry and physics) to human health. The strong emphasis on hands-on scientific inquiry, research collaborations, critical thinking skills and translational health sciences prepare students for excellence and leadership in the health sciences field. .

The Department of International Health offers one of the few undergraduate programs in international health in the U.S. with unique opportunities for hands-on learning locally, nationally, and abroad. Students conduct projects in countries all over the world, including Uganda

The International Health major focuses on public health and health systems management, specifically emphasizing how the environment, culture, economics, and politics interact to influence health status around the globe. While at Georgetown, students learn from faculty experts who have had distinguished careers with organizations such as the World Bank, the Pan American Health Organization, and the World Health Organization. Students also collaborate with faculty on federally funded research projects.

The Department of Nursing offers undergraduate and graduate programs, which support the school’s overall goal of preparing morally reflective health care leaders and scholars who strive to improve the health and well-being of all people with sensitivity to cultural differences and issues of justice. The Department of Nursing offers undergraduate programs in preparation for students who want to enter the nursing profession. The nursing program features: hands-on clinical coursework occurs in the first year of study, senior elective allows students to request a particular clinical or professional area of interest, and students are able to practice clinical experiences on a state-of-the-art patient simulator.

The Accelerated Second Degree BSN program prepares students who have already completed a bachelor's degree or higher in another field for professional nursing practice. The program is 16-months long, and at the end of that time, successful graduates earn a BSN. The program allows students to: graduate with a BSN in only 16 months, learn from faculty who are expert clinicians that bring real-world experience to the classroom, practice clinical experiences on a state-of-the-art patient simulator. Graduates of the program are eligible and prepared to complete the national nursing licensure examination (NCLEX-RN), required to practice as a professional nurse.

Graduates of these programs have pursued careers and/or graduate study in the following areas: medicine, physician assistant, advanced practice nursing, dentistry, podiatry, physical therapy, clinical research, public health, epidemiology, forensics, pharmaceutical sales/marketing, health care law, health care consulting, hospital administration, and many other fields. Certificates are also available for undergraduate students in the following subject areas: International Health and Population Health.
