The village has expanded greatly in recent years with a number of new housing developments built around the edge of the older parts of the village. The village has its own primary school, Saxilby C. E. Primary School and several secondary schools are located nearby such as the Queen Elizabeth's High School

. Lincoln city centre is only 7 miles from the village, and there are three regular bus services through the village, with at least two buses towards Lincoln each hour and at least one towards Gainsborough and Scunthorpe.

Village pubs are the Anglers Hotel on High Street, the now closed Ship Inn and the reportedly haunted Sun Inn on Bridge Street, which has recently begun to serve food. The Bridge Inn on the A57 has also now closed.
