As of the census of 2000, there were 9,577 people, 3,952 households, and 2,877 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,553.7/km˛ (4,030.6/mi˛). There were 4,257 housing units at an average density of 690.6/km˛ (1,791.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 94.99% White, 1.02% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.55% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.95% of the population.
There were 3,952 households out of which 26.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
