Sandnessjøen was a separate municipality from 1899 to 1965, when it was incorporated into Alstahaug. The municipality was named Stamnes from 1899 to 1948. Beginning in late June 2011, Widerøe will launch direct flights in summer between Sandnessjøen Airport and Oslo Airport.
