2009 Floods

On the night of 28 November 2009, there was exceptional flooding in the Waterways estate in Sallins village. Approximately 100 houses at the rear of the estate were flooded by 4 feet of water and 300 hundred people had to be evacuated, some families required emergency services to bring them to safety in boats. The flooding was believed to be the result of blocked drainage culverts in lands adjacent to the estate. The land on which the Waterways estate was built is not thought to be a flood plain or a swamp. Heavy rain in the weeks leading up to the flooding on 28 November 2009 meant that the blocked culverts underneath the Dublin-Cork train line and the Kerdiffstown Road caused the canal feeder to overflow and flood the adjacent Waterways estate. The canal feeder collects surface water from North Naas and the M7 motorway and delivers it to the Grand Canal in Sallins. When locals of Sallins cleared the blocked culverts, all the water cleared from the estate.
