History

St. Patrick’s was established on May 6, 1861, and officially registered as a high school in 1867. Its founder was Rev. J.A. Willy of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), who controlled the school till June 1935. It was then taken over by the Franciscan

order till 6 October 1950. Since 1950 it has had Pakistani principals belonging to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi.

School streams include the technical stream consisting of polytechnic education and the matriculation stream in which students sit for the Karachi Board examinations.

The remaining two streams are the ‘O’ and ‘A’ level streams where students sit for the Cambridge examinations (UCLES now CIE). This stream is composed of compulsory and optional subjects which include Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, English Literature, Computers and Environment Management. Of the Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The school is divided into three sections at the secondary level: the Cambridge section (prepares students for O and A level), the Metric section (prepares students for local examinations) and the Technical section (imparts technical or trade education)

School facilities include separate libraries for all sections, laboratories, including computer labs, sporting fields, auditoriums, scouting and college counseling. The school has produced leaders and personalities, including two cardinals of the Catholic Church, two presidents of Pakistan, two prime ministers of Pakistan, two chief ministers of Sindh, and mayors of Karachi.

The school encourages sports, particularly cricket and hockey. It has produced a number of sportsmen who have gone on to play for the national team.

The School Band started over sixty years ago and is made up entirely of students of the school.

The O Level Section

This section is from class 6-11.

Every year around 250 to 300 hundred students around the city compete for admission to Class 6.

The subject selection for students is made in the 10th Grade. The subjects the school offers are the five compulsory subjects (Mathematics, English Language, Urdu, Pakistan Studies, Islamiat), and the other subjects (Which are to be chosen in certain groups) are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Studies, Business Studies, Economics, Accounts, Environmental Management, Additional Mathematics, English Literature and Statistics.

The O'Level exam syllabus for the subjects Islamiat, Pakistan Studies and Urdu are covered in Class 10, so the O'Level exam for these subjects are recommended to be given in the same year.

A Levels section

The A Levels is the only co-education section of the school; admission to the ‘A’ level section is on merit.

Life after A Levels

Most students join college as soon as they graduate from the A Levels. Many of the students go on to study overseas, mainly the US.
