The College also holds an annual musical with brother school Salesian College (Chadstone), and participates in the Rock Eisteddfod. Sacred Heart College encourages students to strive for excellence and achieve higher goals.

House teams

The names given to the house teams are connected with the traditions and heritage of the Sisters of Our Lady of the missions. The College holds four houses; Bede (red), Paul (gold), Trinity (blue) and Xavier (green). The students are put into one of the four houses when they start at the college. The House teams participate in Sport events, such as the 'Swimming carnival' and 'Athletics Day' and a trophy is given to the house captain of the winning team, as well as many other awards. The houses also participate in the 'House Arts' festival, which involves each of the houses putting on a mini-performance for the whole school. The judges, usually teachers, then choose a winner and again, the winner gets a trophy.

Bede

Bede house was named in honour of Mother Mary St. Bede. She was a pioneer member of the congregation in England and a great educationalist who gave constant encouragement to the sisters during their difficult years when establishing a school in Western Australia. The house colour is Red.

Paul

Paul house was named in honour of St. Paul the Apostle. He was fired with great missionary spirit and used examples of the competitive spirit in sport to urge on the early Christians who had to face persecution. "Surely you know that many runners take part in a race but only one of them wins the prize. Run, then, in such a way as to win the prize. Every athlete in training submits to strict discipline in order to be crowned with a wreath that will not last; but we do it for one that will last forever. That is why I run straight for the finish line". (Cor. 9:24-26). The House colour is Gold.

Trinity

Trinity house is dedicated to the three persons in one God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These divine persons work together for the salvation of the world, symbolising our need for harmonious work and team spirit. The House colour is blue.

Xavier

Xavier House was named by Sister Mary Clement who was a sports mistress. The missionary Francis Xavier had three virtues: a great desire to bring souls to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an heroic obedience and a great spirit of sacrifice. He is the patron of Foreign Missions and of Sarawak, Australia, New Zealand and China. The House colour is Emerald Green.

History

Sacred Heart Girls' College at Oakleigh was opened in 1957 by the sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. They came from the convent in Highgate, Perth, WA, bringing with them the wonderful traditions of their congregation.

When Euphrasie Barbier established the Congregation of Our Lady of the Missions in France in 1861, she took on a new name: Mother Mary of the Heart of Jesus. It is from her name and special devotion to the Sacred Heart that our College is named - like many others established by her sisters around the world.

Euphrasie wanted to continue Jesus' mission to reveal to all peoples God's spirit, alive and present in the world. Her sisters were to be witnesses to the good news and everyone carries the image and likeness of God in their hearts and recognizing this enables them to live their lives to the fullest. She especially wanted her sisters to go out of their way to carry this message ot women and children. Her tradition of Christian witness among women, ad her love of Mary as our model, have a special value at Sacred Heart College.

The Catholic girls' college was opened by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions in 1957 and celebrated its 50 year anniversary, the Golden Jubilee in 2007.

Motto

The College motto is "Semper Superne Nitens" which means 'Always Striving Upwards'. The students are encouraged by their teachers to strive towards higher standards - in spiritual development and a closer familiarity with God, in personal behaviour and character development, and in pursuit of higher academic standards.

Crown

The crown symbolises a reward for excellence. It is mentioned several times in the New Testament as a reward for those who have persevered in doing right. (1 Peter 5:4; 2 Tim 4: 6-8; Revelations 2: 10)

Laurel

In Ancient Greece winners of athletic contests were given a laurel wreath in recognition of their victory. The leaves of the crest are symbolic of reward and victory. St. Paul reminds us that we should not make material rewards our only goal but strive towards eternal and spiritual rewards.

Shield

The shield signifies protection. The training and ideals imparted to students during their college life will act as armour and be a source of strength in their future lives. (Eph. 6:10-23; Ps, 5:13)

Scroll

In ancient times any important document was written on a scroll. Hence the motto and the name of the college are written on scrolls to emphasize their importance.

The Letters

The letters V and K stand for Virtue and Knowledge which reminds us that learning is important but even more important is our living out of our Christian ideals.

The letters S and H stand for the Sacred Heart, symbolising the great love that Jesus has for us all, and that we should strive to spread that love to others.
