History

 by Marcel Môme, Aged 25 he formed the (Society for the General Application of Electricity & Mechanics), a company whose central business would be mechanics. Early products included electrical components, power distribution equipment, cameras, projectors and military equipment.

From 1942, following a request from the French Ministry of Telecommunications, SAGEM developed a new communication system : the telex printer. This date marked their move towards telecommunications.

SAGEM has grouped its activities around two activities:
  • A communication branch (SAGEM is ranked second within the French telecommunication equipment providers);
  • A Defense & Security branch (Sagem Défense Sécurité), which covers three domains:
    • Optronics and Defense (imagers and infrared and light-intensifying cameras, sights, periscopes, gyrostabilised pods, but also cryptology, UAV systems, etc.);
    • Avionics (inertial navigation, civilian and military avionics, guidance and pointing systems);
    • Electronics (electronics, software, circuit boards, control units).


The group is ranked third within the French electronic, defence, and security market.

In 2008, SAGEM divested its mobile phone business (Sagem Mobiles), leading to the launch of the VC-backed Sagem Wireless

In the 1980s and 90s, Sagem expanded aggressively into the telecommunications and consumer electronics industries. The defence electronics branch of SAGEM was selected to upgrade the electronic systems of some France-built Mirage aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force
